The wife is actually starting to get on my ass about the surface rust on Project Thanks Obama. Apparently patina isn’t her bag. She wants a new paint job, I want a non-two-thousand-dollar-fix. The previous owner did something really smart by just blasting the hood with primer so the original paint (what’s left of it) and the rust is still underneath. The roof is almost as bad, save the lack of primer.
So what I’d like to do is make it look as decent as possible while spending as little cash. I know y’all are gon’ say “Plastidip!” but that probably won’t last very long as the truck gets utilized (read: scratched, bumped, scraped, etc) on a regular basis.
What options aside from Plastidip do you recommend for making shitty, rusting, 1990s paint look more presentable?

The $50 rustoleum paint job.

I’d like to change my answer.

I got quoted by napa $400 for enough paint to repaint my entire truck. Jake Huitt said I could use his air compressor and gravity feed gun to set up a paint booth and respray my truck. I bet he’d let you do the same.

Will that stop rust that’s underneath primer and paint already?
![]() 07/06/2015 at 13:36 |

Not if its under the factory primer and paint. Sand, Naval Jelly, Rustoleum.

Paint booth? Hell, I may just sand the thing down then! I was planning something cheap and coverup, but damn

who was the opponaut who just did a rally inspired rattle can job on their truck. perhaps an oppo get together to paint yours?

I don’t think it will affect the rust that many layers deep I was always under the impression that primer offers no protection at all and you want a paint to seal it off. Just rough it up with scotch pads and go to town.

Thanks for pointing out Naval Jelly; had never heard of it before :)

Sander or power wire brush to take off everything bad/loose, sand down borders of the iffy areas, RustOleum sandable/filler primer, more sanding, some kind of top coat.

I like the get-together idea! Maybe smoke up some burgs...

Yeah primer definitely does nothing to stop rust. I can’t really complain though

I have brought this idea up, and have had it shot down, countless times :(
-she wants a playtoy offroad truck
-doesn’t want to cover it in protective coating

If you watch some earlier episodes of Wheeler Dealers you can watch Ed paint panels with surprising results using a spray can (that was specialty ordered to match). Companies like paintscratch.com will make you a spray can if you supply the paint code. It costs around $25 IIRC. The key is in your prep, and to clear it afterwards. There’s some cheap mobile painters that will use the same technique for $200-300 where I live, and do all the work for you. They advertise on craigslist, and sometimes approach people at gas stations.

You can get it in a color of your choosing and you don't have to get the textured finish. I know because the CEO of Line-X came to my school and had a Q&A session with our engineering department and I asked him about it. I'd say just call up your local Line-X place and see what they say. Your wife might go for that.

durabak - smooth finish. basically smooth finsih truck bedliner available in many colors that are UV resistant.

Oh I know, I know. I’m quite familiar with their products :). The wife just won’t have it

The wife won’t go for bedliner-type products. I’ve tried multiple times :(

Back yard paint job. Personally on an older truck I’d say fix the rust then primer the whole thing with spray cans. Cheap and easy to repair.

May go that route. I’ve sprayed some panels before myself, though nothing on the scale of an entire truck (my brother is the body guru). I’m quite meticulous, hopefully I’ll be able to produce results to my liking :\

Get the free sample that they send you and show her. This stuff has a smooth finsih so its not at all chunky, it looks and feels similar to paint.

Sanded down my yj used about 4 cans of duplicolor ready mixed paint from advanced auto, used a $20+ paint gun from harbor freight, and how to from you tube, not perfect, but good enough.
